Where to Find Other Stonehenge Monuments Plus Other Stonehenge Facts

There are other Standing Stones and Henge monument Stonehenge than you know. They are dotted around the south of England. They can be found north of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Are the cemeteries, or astronomical instruments, or sacred areas of the Neolithic cultures that built them?

We have heard all sorts of theories about the origin, but I do not think you need to get too caught up in theory enjoy visiting them. Stonehenge is the most famous of the stone circles. One interesting little fact is not, however, the henge. Let's get the boring technical stuff with more than ... Henges are, strictly speaking, a circular or oval-shaped space defined by the bank with internal ditch ... and dirt bank probably came from the inner ditch ... is not it?

word "henge" came from the ancient name for Stonehenge, which meant something like hanging stones. Soon all the circles found themselves called henges .... Then archaeologists discovered that Stonehenge has the classic bank and ditch what is now considered a henge monument ... So it's a great example ... Stonehenge stone circle ... but henge.

You do not really need to know it all ... If you like what you're looking to find the ancient monuments, there are plenty of henges, standing stones and stone circles to visit in the UK and beyond. Get a good map that marks out places of archaeological interest, and meander out into the country side. Some are remote, but you'll find a cute little village with a few tourists, and you might find that this is a great hook for travel.

There are several henge monuments and other Neolithic sites in the historic landscape of Stonehenge, which is also called the Stonehenge World Heritage Site .... Durrington Walls, Woodhenge and Avebury. There are several burial mounds, such as the West Kennet Long Barrow. And there is Silbury Hill ... a man-made hill of unknown purpose.

We like Stonehenge, but our favorite is the Avebury stone circle ... who, incidentally, henge. It is about 20 miles (32 km) north of Stonehenge. You walk between the stones, feeling very special. Ancient stone wrap around a bit selo.Red Lion Pub actually sitting in a circle ... stop and a pint.

In addition, a rich landscape of Wiltshire in England, you can find several henge monuments in Cumbria Lake District. Look for the Castlerigg stone circle, Mayburgh, Long Meg and daughter, and Swinside which some call the best stone circle in England.

Scotland has a lot of places ... standing stones, stone rows, stone circles, Cairns and ruins.

Cornwall is another rich area for Neolithic standing stones and henges. Park and walk to a site called Men Tol ... three stone alignment, the center stone ring is large enough to crawl through .... All kinds of legends associated with this one! Wales also has many burial chambers and standing stones.

If you really get into it, you can go in search of Neolithic stone monuments in Ireland and Italy. And France has some incredible "alignment" and standing stones deserves a trip.
